There once was a fellow named Paul,
Who said: “Vote for me in the Fall;
I’m ready to fight,
For I’ve always been right;
As your leader, I’ll be 10 feet tall.”
Donald Trump, Mike Huckabee and Mitch Daniels have dropped out of the 2012 presidential contest, and, as last week’s column pointed out, Newt Gingrich comes with some serious deficiencies in the family values department.
That leaves Texas Congressman Ron Paul who, at age 75, has announced that he is once again ready to make a third attempt to attain the Oval Office.
“I’ve been beating the same drum for 30 years,” said Paul. “I think the time is right.”
A member of the lower house since 1976, Paul has been a consistent opponent of government over-reach and excessive spending. When he failed to secure Republican endorsement for the presidency in 1988, he ran as Libertarian but was unsuccessful.
Beaten, but unbowed, he continues to decry runaway military spending and our involvement in Iraq, Afghanistan and, more recently, Libya.
Paul claims that the conflicts are financially unsustainable and that the nation’s continued deficit spending will inevitably lead to a devalued dollar and complete economic collapse if the monetary hemorrhaging is not staunched.
In these sentiments, he has been echoing the late President Dwight Eisenhower, who warned the country to “beware the military-industrial complex.”
Recent history would seem to bear out the wisdom of such warnings.
